In August 2005, Sligo celebrated 50 years of racing at Cleveragh. The inaugural meeting had an attendance of more than 7,000 racegoers and the then Mayor Mr E. Tolan formally opened the course. Sligo stages both jumps and Flat racing and, traditionally a summer venue, the majority of meetings are held in the evening. The two-day meeting in early August is the course’s busiest, when the Guinness Sligo Handicap Hurdle is one of the feature races. The track is right handed and sharp, with a circuit of little more than a mile. There are five fences to a circuit on the chase course, and the Flat course essentially is suited to speed horses, where a handy position is favoured.
