Gowran Park racecourse, located in County Kilkenny, Ireland, is famous for being the venue of the first ever racecourse commentary in Ireland which took place there in 1952. The racecourse had already been around for nearly 40 years – it staged its first meeting in 1914 – and now hosts around 16 meetings throughout the course of the year, both on the Flat and over jumps. The Denny Cordell Lavarack and Lanwades Stud EBF Fillies Stakes and the Hurry Harriet Fillies Stakes are the main attractions on the level, however the picturesque track is more known for its jumps races, with the Thyestes Handicap Chase in January kicking off a series of quality fixtures. February brings the Red Mills Trial which is often used as a prep run for the Cheltenham Festival, while, in early March, the Tetratema Cup is a popular hunter chase event which shares the card with the highly valuable Shamrock Chase Handicap.
