Ffos Las Races | Racecourse Guide, Help & Tips

The Welsh Champion Hurdle is one of the biggest races to be staged at Ffos Las and was revived in 2010 (had formerly been held at Chepstow). It was won by Oscar Whiskey in 2011 before he finished third in the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. The race was often under threat from bad weather given it was held in February, however, and it was moved to a new slot in October in 2016. Ffos Las’s other big race, the West Wales National, has also been moved from the depths of winter and is now held in April. As well as National Hunt racing, there is also Flat racing that takes place during the summer.

A wide, galloping, left-handed circuit of 1½ miles, with a straight of just over 4f. It has no undulations but a very slight rise over the course of the back straight and the opposite in the home straight. There are short run-ins for both hurdles and chases, though it is in essence a fair track, with the chase course providing a good test of jumping. Field sizes tend to be on the small side. The ground rides mostly on the soft side of good and can be extremely gruelling at its worst, leading to many an attritional race. The course has had problems caused by low sun, resulting in the omission of obstacles in the home straight.
