A tactical race, the pace quickening in the straight, and the winner was seen to better advantage than the runner-up in what was no more than an average renewal, the first 2 around long enough to think they will come up short back in Group 1 company, the favourite rather underwhelming in receipt of weight from the pair that beat him.

CUSTOM CUT (IRE) had progressed really well last year until his final start and was quickly back on track, at least as good as ever after 6 months off; close up, led over 2f out, kept on well final 1f, kept up to work; may find things tougher from now on, but has been a great credit to his stable since he joined it.

HERE COMES WHEN (IRE) was a dual Group 2 winner in the autumn and ran creditably under a penalty after 6 months off, deserving extra credit, given how the race was run; held up, not settle fully, headway over 2f out, chased leader final 1f, not quicken final 50 yds; looks to have returned in good heart.

SHIFTING POWER had 3 good efforts in Group 1 company to his name last spring/summer, and, unpenalised, was well backed for his return after 9 months off, but he wasn't quite at his best; waited with, took keen hold, shaken up over 2f out, not quicken 1f out, not persevered with once held; perhaps needed the run more than looked the case, but still has something to prove after this.

TOP NOTCH TONTO (IRE) wasn't quite at his best for most of 2014, but wasn't disgraced on his return after 6 months off, likely to find himself in races run more to suit him in future; tracked pace, outpaced over 2f out.

BALTIC KNIGHT (IRE) on the face of it ran well upped in grade, though he was the one runner with a recent outing to his name and the pace of the race was hardly going to sort these out that well; waited with, outpaced over 2f out.

BOW CREEK (IRE) who ended last year with 2 Group 2 victories, needed run and was below form on first outing since leaving Mark Johnston, in first-time cheekpieces after 7 months off; led, headed over 2f out, not quicken, not unduly punished once beaten; it's early days for him with his new yard and he's clearly not one to write off just yet.
