overcame the rise in class, clearly going to be a much better chaser than hurdler and the type that his trainer will get the maximum out of, a return right handed clearly suiting and the prospect of being campaigned this way round suggesting the Scilly Isles, Pendil and Punchestown as the obvious programme, a step up in trip likely to draw further improvement; led, jumped well, ridden 3 out, in command last, kept on well; will benefit from return to further than 2m; remains with potential.

ceded the lead, possibly due to seeming to do too much in front last time, and that perhaps told against him, though he looked full of running into the straight and wouldn't fully apply himself off the bridle, all in all a bit underwhelming; tracked pace, took keen hold, not fluent eighth, poised to strike home turn, ridden 3 out, hung left then badly right, no extra, held when mistake last; questions to answer as his chasing progress stalls.

ran respectably, though last of 3, allowing the winner (his stable companion) the lead perhaps not to his advantage; tracked pace, took keen hold, shaken up 4 out, not quicken straight, kept on run-in.

down markedly in trip, on first outing since leaving Simon Hodgson after 16 months off, was hopelessly out of his depth, or just hopeless; soon detached, jumped left, tailed off when pulled up eighth.

Since Riverside Theatre was successful in 2009, this race has had a run of celebrated winners, either already successful at Grade 1 level or set to be so subsequently, with Sprinter Sacre, Altior, Simonsig and Dodging Bullets among them, to name just 4 - whether this renewal will prove so fabled is doubtful, but the time does at least back up the form.
