was fitter for his reappearance and made a successful debut over fences, immediately proving himself at least as good a chaser as hurdler even if he did benefit from a good ride, Johnson sensibly allowing the leader to press on in the back straight and saving more for the straight; prominent, slow 5 out and slightly outpaced by Shantou Rock, asked for effort and rallied before 2 out, led when untidy last, stayed on well; he's likely to stay a bit further (has raced only around 2m so far) and will have no trouble winning more novices this season, whilst he's earnt a crack at one of the early higher-grade races in this sphere.

was turned over at a short price but still reaffirmed just how well he's taken to chasing and should have won again in truth, doing too much too soon; led, jumped fluently, went with enthusiasm, clear 5 out, reduced advantage soon after 2 out, headed last, no extra; he's still an exciting novice with an even bigger performance in him over fences.

a lightly-raced winning hurdler, should strip fitter for the run after 8 months off; chased leader until third, outpaced seventh, not fluent after, no threat from 3 out but not knocked about; he's open to significant improvement in this sphere.

Only 5 runners but a good-quality novice and the first 2 are likely to be given a chance in graded races sooner or later, whilst each of the 3 well beaten on the day are likely improvers in handicaps later on; Shantou Rock pressed on a bit too early and shaped best.

OZZIE THE OSCAR (IRE) was fitter for his reappearance and made a successful debut over fences, immediately proving himself at least as good a chaser as hurdler even if he did benefit from a good ride, Johnson sensibly allowing the leader to press on in the back straight and saving more for the straight; prominent, slow 5 out and slightly outpaced by Shantou Rock, asked for effort and rallied before 2 out, led when untidy last, stayed on well; he's likely to stay a bit further (has raced only around 2m so far) and will have no trouble winning more novices this season, whilst he's earnt a crack at one of the early higher-grade races in this sphere.
