didn't need to be near his best to gain back-to-back wins in this race after 7 months off but this was a pleasing start to his campaign and the ideal springboard for stiffer tasks ahead; mid-field, travelled strongly, quickened to lead after 2 out, in control when not fluent last, shaken up only briefly and had plenty in hand; hampered when third in last season's Champion Hurdle before winning the Aintree Hurdle, he's likely to be a contender for top honours again, especially with My Tent Or Yours now out for the season, but Jezki won't be easy to overcome, while last season's top novice Faugheen is potentially another major player in this division.

whose Taunton defeat of Purple Bay has been made to look better since, ran a blinder to progress again after 6 months off, though was flattered by his proximity to the winner; chased leader, led early in straight, headed after 2 out, one paced; his future prospects depend on what the handicapper makes of this.

winner of 3 of his 5 starts as a novice in 2013/13, is still smart on the Flat and shaped well given another crack at hurdling; held up, outpaced after 2 out, stayed on, would have benefited from a stronger gallop; well worth another chance; remains open to improvement.

fit from Flat, isn't the force of old but showed plenty of ability remains; held up, travelled smoothly, untidy fifth, headway before 2 out, effort flattened out.

in first-time tongue strap after 7 months off, ran as well as could be expected; chased leader, lost place before 2 out; this was just his fourth start over hurdles, but he was found out in Grade 1 company last spring after winning a couple of novices at Market Rasen.

The return of last season's Champion Hurdle third and he readily gave weight and a beating to some useful rivals, among which Forgotten Voice makes most appeal going forward; Australia Day set a fair pace.
