An intriguing, if not quite vintage, renewal of the Irish Oaks, the late withdrawal of the Epsom heroine Qualify meaning that just 1 of these had previously tasted success at the highest level, and it went the way of one who was making the leap from listed company; Together Forever was given plenty of rope up front, but the overall pace was a strong one and those held up never got competitive; a fifth British-trained winner of this race in the last 7 years, Covert Love was supplying both her fledgling trainer, Hugo Palmer, and rider, Pat Smullen, with their first win in the race.

COVERT LOVE (IRE) progressed again to continue her meteoric rise through the ranks, fully justifying connections' decision to supplement her at a cost of €40,000, though it was a victory that owed plenty to the tactical nous of Pat Smullen, crucially getting first run on the pair that chased her home; chased leader, headway entering straight, led under pressure 1f out, always holding on; plans for her are fluid at this stage, not in the St Leger or the Yorkshire Oaks, but has more options with regards trip now and no reason why she won't go on improving.

JACK NAYLOR bounced back to form back on a more orthodox track, belatedly proving that this trip holds no fears for her; mid-division, ridden entering straight, kept on well, took second dying strides; takes her racing well and should remain a force at this level.

CURVY came up short in her bid for a 5-timer, but produced an effort broadly on a par with what she achieved in the Ribblesdale, conceding first run to the winner early in the straight and only run out of second in the dying strides; mid-division, pushed along over 3f out, headway under pressure straight, second 1f out, no extra; may benefit from a break now, but her ability to handle ground softer than good gives her plenty of options for later in the season.

TOGETHER FOREVER (IRE) shaped much better than distance beaten suggests for the second start in a row, an overly aggressive ride her undoing on this occasion, all in all this a solid base upon which to build for the rest of the season; raced clear, shaken up entering straight, collared 1f out, no extra; she could be one for something like the Beverly D Stakes later in the year.

SPEEDY BOARDING who needed to find plenty of improvement, ran well on form; mid-division, ridden early in straight, effort flattened out; will prove suited by a return to 1¼m.

STELLAR GLOW (IRE) faced with a stiff task, ran as well as could be expected; held up, ridden entering straight, one paced, never landed a blow, left poorly placed.

GRETCHEN failed to build on promise of last run, though was set plenty to do the way things panned out and wasn't knocked about once clearly held; raced well off the pace, made no impression; worth another chance.

WORDS (IRE) proved disappointing, but this run is easily overlooked, having a hopeless task from position; dropped out, still plenty to do 3f out, ridden entering straight, made no impression and not persevered with once held; well worth another chance.

KISSED BY ANGELS (IRE) shaped as if amiss; held up, dropped away early in straight, heavily eased off.
