down in trip after 5 months off, strictly showed improved form to get off the mark but was extremely fortunate on the day; disputed lead, went with zest, ridden when carried head bit awkwardly home turn, beaten when left clear 2 out, closed down between last 2 (absence perhaps telling then), driven out; one to take on next time.

modest in bumpers, was given a considerate introduction to hurdling but, at the same time, very much picked up the pieces in the straight; raced off the pace, novicey mistakes, shaken up from sixth, held when left second 3 out, effort to close on tiring winner when hit last, no further impression.

had his sights lowered but ran a moody race after 7 weeks off; chased leaders, raced indolently, labouring back straight, dropped away from 3 out, not the first time his temperament has come under suspicion.

was most unlucky not to win, clearly still at the very top of his form for all Rolling Maul's sour display helped his cause; helped force pace, ridden after 3 out, went on home turn, asserted early in straight, in control around 6 lengths up and with race at mercy when fell 3 out.

A second race on the card decided by a late mistake, the difference it made this time all the more stark, Admiral Hawke in full control when coming down 2 out, his fellow pacesetter left clear but hardly finishing with purpose.
