An eventful handicap chase, Green Wizard looking to have just taken the measure of Galway Jack when making a mess of the last, leaving the way clear for that one to see off the challenge of Balzaccio, who is still working his way back to form after a lengthy absence.

GALWAY JACK (IRE) opened account for the campaign but needed a slice of luck to do so and barely improved upon previous starts this term; made running, jumped soundly, pressed on between 4 out and 3 out, tackled between last 2 and just headed when let back in by faller at the last, stayed on; this is the first time all season he's managed back-to-back good runs, but he was probably booked for second had Green Wizard stood up, so will be vulnerable off higher marks.

BALZACCIO (FR) back over fences after another 3 months off, did better than on reappearance and the way he went through the race suggests he'll get nearer to the useful form he showed back in 2011/12 before much longer, possibly once tackling a sounder surface (all wins achieved on going no softer than good to soft); held up, untidy tenth, headway on bridle straight and every chance between last 2, effort flattened out; made a promising start for new yard and not one to write off.

BILLY CUCKOO (IRE) in a change of headgear, was quickly reverted to positive tactics and wasted no time in putting a laboured effort behind him, but this underlines that his mark is now on the stiff side following his Doncaster win; close up, awkward eighth, niggled along soon after, still every chance 3 out, gradually lost touch with first 2 from next.

GREEN WIZARD (IRE) was strong in the betting and came right back to his best after a 6-week layoff, likely to have taken advantage of a dropping mark but for blundering and falling at the last (rated accordingly); held up, untidy fourth, crept closer early final circuit, effort home turn, found plenty for pressure and had taken narrow lead when getting the last all wrong.

ARTHUR'S PASS fared no better for the application of cheekpieces, proving far more miss than hit this season; in touch, dived at sixth, blundered ninth and beaten soon after.

DASHING GEORGE (IRE) is better judged on previous efforts as this patently came too soon just 2 days on from Newbury; held up, soon off bridle, untidy fourth, beaten long way out.
