maintained his unbeaten record after 6 months off with a smooth and clearcut success, despite not looking fully wound up beforehand, his performance auguring really well for the summer ahead, with the clear prospect that he could develop into a top-class colt over middle distances, his pedigree firmly suggesting he ought to be better over further than 1m; raced centre, in touch, travelled well, quickened to lead 2f out, ridden final 1f, found extra; he's a short-priced favourite for the Derby and although something to challenge him may emerge from the trials in the next couple of weeks, he has better credentials than most Guineas' winners to follow up with a second classic success at Epsom.

excelled himself up in grade, following 2 good paydays in Doha with another much closer to home; raced centre, held up, headway 2f out, chased leader final 1f, kept on well, made no impression on winner; he's likely to be kept at 1m, and with the winner, third and possibly others of the principals heading elsewhere, he's likely to hold leading form claims in the St James's Palace.

ran well upped in grade, just about matching the form he showed in the Craven despite things not going perfectly for him as on that occasion, likely to have finished second had he been racing with the main group; led stand side group, though not quite up with pace in centre, effort over 2f out, switched gradually to main group, kept on well final 1f; he's reportedly being aimed at the Derby, his pedigree offering a fair amount of hope that he will stay the significantly longer trip, his 2 efforts this year encouraging with further big targets in mind.

shaped encouragingly after 7 months off over 1f longer trip, his relative lack of experience his undoing, this a good platform on which to build, whether kept at around 1m or stepped up in trip; raced centre, prominent, travelled well, ran green over 2f out, kept on inside final 1f.

put his poor run in the Craven firmly behind him, running close to the level that had seen him make a race of it with Saxon Warrior at Doncaster, and he might have done even better had he been with the main group in the closing stages, though that he ended up isolated was as much his doing as his jockey's; raced stand side, waited with, travelled well, effort 2f out, edged left and soon on his own near the rail, kept on final 1f, never landed a blow; he has the ability to win a good race, whether he will apply himself well enough to do so is the doubt.

failed to progress as anticipated from his reappearance, surprisingly short of pace at a crucial stage, despite the longer trip, perhaps that race on testing ground having taken plenty out of him; raced centre, chased leaders, took keen hold, not quicken over 2f out, kept on final 1f; it'll be best to remember the promise of his last 2 runs when he next appears, the Irish Guineas an obvious option if the winner goes the Derby route.

back up in trip, ran well, confirming Greenham placings with Raid and Expert Eye, purely and simply found out in better company; raced centre, waited with, took keen hold, effort over 2f out, not quicken, kept on final 1f, made little impression; he's been well placed to win the races he has, not so easy to do from now on, in any case likely to be campaigned to achieve some black type at Group 1 level.

ran about as well as could have been expected upped further in grade, not really clued up enough for this sort of test (representing the sponsors); raced far side, held up, took keen hold, switched to centre group before halfway, effort 2f out, plugged on, made little impression; he appeared effective at 1m and may have more to offer at a more realistic level.

upped in trip, after 10 months off, was effectively used as a pacemaker, but shaped very well in the process, impressing in appearance beforehand and likely to improve a fair bit if running on his own behalf, very much a sprinter on looks; soon led, went with zest, headed 2f out, weakened final 1f; would be a very interesting contender for the Commonwealth Cup.

looked to have come on physically since the Greenham, but in form terms went backwards from that reappearance, possibly not handling this track that well and perhaps not effective at 1m, but, all in all, with a fair bit to prove at present; raced centre, held up, took keen hold, headway over 2f out, effort fizzling out when hampered briefly over 1f out, weakened final 1f, not persevered with once held; his effort seems to leave connections with a couple of options: a likely sort for the Heron Stakes, a refuge for the underachieving, if they want to continue at 1m - and he wasn't so obviously headstrong this time - or they could switch him to sprinting and aim at the Commonwealth Cup, the latter the more appealing prospect.

had lots of experience, much of it suggesting he wouldn't be remotely good enough, and he dropped away after being an ineffectual pacemaker, with nothing to make the pace for by halfway, the longer trip a side issue; raced far side, up with pace in other groups, deserted by followers after halfway, weakened 2f out.

was given little chance from his position, up in trip and up in grade back on turf after 9 weeks off, most likely just not up to the task, though it's possible he didn't see out a well-run 1m, even though he should stay on pedigree; raced centre, dropped out, travelled well, still plenty to do over 2f out, ridden, not quicken, weakened final 1f; the Jersey Stakes would seem an obvious option, particularly given how well he ran at Royal Ascot last year.

A Guineas is surely never not keenly anticipated, though this renewal was intriguing and open, rather than a coronation for a perceived superstar, as it should be the starting point for the hopes of the classic generation, with a fascinating mix of trial winners, promising sorts and leading 2-y-os, though a couple of the last-named had plenty to prove and none of the O'Brien-trained first 4 home in the Dewhurst was in the field, though they weren't required, the Racing Post Trophy winner Saxon Warrior gaining a decisive victory on his return, potentially an above-average winner of what appears just an up-to-standard renewal; the field raced in 3 groups initially, most ending up in the centre by the finish, though the third, who switched only late, and fifth, who went his own way, may be better than the result after racing away from the centre, Murillo having set up the race perfectly for his stable companion.

SAXON WARRIOR (JPN) maintained his unbeaten record after 6 months off with a smooth and clearcut success, despite not looking fully wound up beforehand, his performance auguring really well for the summer ahead, with the clear prospect that he could develop into a top-class colt over middle distances, his pedigree firmly suggesting he ought to be better over further than 1m; raced centre, in touch, travelled well, quickened to lead 2f out, ridden final 1f, found extra; he's a short-priced favourite for the Derby and although something to challenge him may emerge from the trials in the next couple of weeks, he has better credentials than most Guineas' winners to follow up with a second classic success at Epsom.

MASAR (IRE) ran well upped in grade, just about matching the form he showed in the Craven despite things not going perfectly for him as on that occasion, likely to have finished second had he been racing with the main group; led stand side group, though not quite up with pace in centre, effort over 2f out, switched gradually to main group, kept on well final 1f; he's reportedly being aimed at the Derby, his pedigree offering a fair amount of hope that he will stay the significantly longer trip, his 2 efforts this year encouraging with further big targets in mind.
