Mostly seasoned handicappers yet the standard of jumping was more akin to a field of untested novices, that only half the field completed telling the story, everything about the bunched finish between the 4 who did show their best screaming ordinary form for the grade.

LOOSE CHIPS went one better than at Sandown 9 weeks earlier in landing a fourth course success (second over fences), no repeat of the sort of lapse that had cost him his previous best chance of a win this season; forced pace, jumped boldly, tackled 3 out and 2 out, found extra.

PORT MELON (IRE) without the headgear this time, found it easier back in a handicap and resumed his progress, albeit running to something like his mark rather than much higher than it, still not 100% convincing a proposition overall in any case; patiently ridden, headway under pressure home turn, effort approaching last, stayed on.

CLOUDY BOB (IRE) wasted no time getting back on track, a 9 lb rise for last month's C&D win enough; dropped out, typically jumped soundly, steady headway out wide from 5 out, shaken up from 3 out, ran on, had every chance.

VALADOM (FR) ran another honest race, benefiting from the drop back in trip yet probably finding even this enough of a test; never far away, blundered thirteenth, ridden home turn, challenged between 3 out and 2 out, no extra last; he's likely to prove at his very best forcing things around 2½m, running into Mystifiable (at Leicester) the last time he tried.

PRESENT VIEW gave more cause for optimism than for some time over fences but was later said to have suffered a career-threatening injury (severed tendon); patiently ridden, smooth headway out wide back straight, pushed along home turn, soon done with 3 out.

BORDER BREAKER (IRE) might have needed the run on his first outing since leaving David Pipe after 5 months off; chased leader, travelled better than most, ridden from 4 out, dropped away home turn.

WIZARDS BRIDGE strong in the betting in a change of headgear and first-time tongue strap, was still going well tracking the pace when falling at the tenth.

THEATRICAL STAR further highlighted his jumping issues by getting only one fence further than at Ascot.

FOND MEMORY (IRE) failed to complete through no fault of his own after 9 weeks off, still taken patiently when hampered and unseated at the tenth.

REPRESENTINGCELTIC (IRE) after 6 months off, stood off much too far at the second and unseated.

SHANTOU MAGIC (IRE) was held up until unseating at the twelfth.

HARRY'S FAREWELL returning from 3 months off, survived a mistake at the fifth only to send his rider skyward with another at the next.

PANTXOA (FR) ran poorly after 9 months off, pulling up for the fourth time in his last 5 starts; ridden more patiently, settled mid-field, never going well from circuit out, behind when clouted 5 out.
