proved better than ever under a well-judged ride (decision not to try and force the pace so much as usual clearly a good one), seen to maximum advantage on a track at which he's very much at home; handy, effort before 3 out, led before last, kept on well, ridden out; the Silver Cup back here after Cheltenham would be ideal for him, but he's very likely to be too high in the handicap to get into that and may find things tough otherwise.

ran creditably over 2f longer trip, again showing no signs of reluctance at the start; in touch, ran wide bend circuit out, still travelling well when headway 4 out, forced to switch before last, stayed on well; holds 2 Cheltenham entries but far from certain he'll be effective on the track, having jumped right and hung right on his only start left handed over fences and tended to lug that way here, the new conditions race at the end of season meeting at Sandown perhaps a suitable target for him.

was well backed in first-time visor after 8 weeks off, having been given a huge chance by the handicapper, but he ended up doing too much too soon; led at good pace, mistake fifth, headed when mistake 3 out, kept on; stuck to task well in the circumstances and almost certainly up to winning off this sort of mark, though there's a feeling this was his day for the time being.

ran creditably in a stronger race than last time, perhaps making his move too soon but essentially where the handicapper wants him; mid-field, bad mistake fourth, went prominent before 4 out, led next, headed before last, no extra run-in.

ran creditably, shaping better than the bare result, likely to have gone closer still but for meeting trouble on the bend; held up, mistake eleventh, effort when hampered after 4 out, rallied well after 2 out, nearest at the finish; still relatively unexposed over fences and could well find a similar event in the spring.

ran respectably, again showing more than enough to suggest he's effective at 3m, his Ascot form perhaps flattering him slightly on subsequent evidence; held up, ridden after 4 out, stayed on, nearest at the finish; he's not entered at Cheltenham, having been well beaten when a market leader for the 2012 Plate, but presumably could go to Aintree.

shaped as if needing run after 3 months off, possibly too close to the pace for his own good as well; chased leader, took keen hold, ridden fourteenth, weakened before 2 out; gave the impression his new mark may not prove beyond him and could well be more competitive if taking his chance in a handicap at Cheltenham.

All 13 ran. Fences: 18.

Winning Owner: Mr Brian Derrick

Time: 6m 10.94s

Overrounds: Industry SP 120%, Betfair SP 102.8%

An open renewal of a valuable, long-established 3m handicap under a new title, less than 6 lengths covering the first 6 home an indication of that, the form having a solid look to it, the really likeable winner gaining a major success for his small yard, though he was seen to optimum advantage, whereas several of those close behind him may be better than the result for one reason or another.

BALLY LEGEND proved better than ever under a well-judged ride (decision not to try and force the pace so much as usual clearly a good one), seen to maximum advantage on a track at which he's very much at home; handy, effort before 3 out, led before last, kept on well, ridden out; the Silver Cup back here after Cheltenham would be ideal for him, but he's very likely to be too high in the handicap to get into that and may find things tough otherwise.
