A moment of history as Ziga Bay became the first back-to-back winner in this race's long roll of honour, dominating from the front in much the same way as last year, though the fact several of the fancied runners failed badly to meet expectations suggests this form might not prove quite so strong as it looks on paper; it was a strongly-run race, with the field stretched some way out, though those held up still seemed at a disadvantage.

ZIGA BOY (FR) is developing into a real Doncaster specialist and, refitted with cheekpieces for the first time since trained in France, produced a career-best effort in repeating his 2016 win in this race; made all, jumped well in main, went with zest, clear from some way out, held on gamely; has struggled away from Doncaster between these 2 Skybet Chase wins, so likely to prove vulnerable off higher marks.

LOOKING WELL (IRE) after 8 months off, seemed to excel himself; mid-division, travelled well, still plenty to do approaching home turn, stayed on strongly from 2 out, nearest at the finish.

ANOTHER HERO (IRE) ran creditably and is clearly on a competitive mark, looking likely to finish even closer for much of the way here; mid-division, travelled smoothly, in contention entering straight, switched before 3 out, no extra run-in (eased close home).

OUT SAM again in cheekpieces, ran respectably but had no excuses; chased leader, again jumped better than is often the case (new jockey last 2 starts), driven leaving home turn, one paced from 2 out.

CAID DU BERLAIS (FR) has winning form at 25f but the rest of his profile suggests he struggles with this sort of trip and lack of stamina certainly seemed the issue here, shaping much better than the distance beaten suggests; waited with, smooth headway end of back straight, every chance 4 out, faded approaching 2 out; should remain competitive off this sort of mark, particularly if returned to shorter.

VICENTE (FR) is yet to fully fire this season, though wasn't seen to best effect on this occasion; raced wide, mid-division, lost place early, behind when blundered thirteenth, late headway, never nearer (finished with running left); probably needs stiffer test of stamina than this nowadays.

BALLYBOKER BREEZE (IRE) disappointed badly and has an all-or-nothing profile of late (lightly raced in recent years); mid-division, not always fluent (mistake second rather set the tone), went in snatches, never involved.

COOLOGUE (IRE) is probably too high in the weights (6lb higher mark than when runner-up in 2016 renewal) but still ran below form; handy, brushed aside from home turn, finished tired.

THIRD INTENTION (IRE) ran one of lesser races; dropped out, shaken up soon after halfway, never involved.

LONG LUNCH shaped a bit better than the distance beaten suggests, though is probably just too high in the weights for now; held up, travelled better than most, good progress soon after halfway, folded from early in straight.

HOLYWELL (IRE) ran no sort of race in this contest for second year running; close up early, lost place fourth, beaten long way out, turned it in; has an excellent record at the Cheltenham Festival, but plenty to prove ahead of this year's meeting.

SOUTHFIELD ROYALE was an interesting runner but looked rusty after 9 months off, admittedly not helped by being placed on the back foot at an early stage; waited with, blundered first, hampered second, never going well from halfway, beaten long way out; worth another chance to confirm last season's novice form.

BIGBADJOHN (IRE) looked to have been let off lightly by handicapper but ran no sort of race after 9 weeks off, shaping as if amiss for all that the hurly-burly nature of this big-field handicap possibly didn't suit; mid-division, hit first, lost place when blundered sixth, reminders after next, labouring in last when slipped up circuit out.

POTTERS CROSS is now on a career-high mark and ran poorly, the fact his stable's other runner flopped badly possibly significant; prominent, made mistakes, struggling badly some way out.
