The biggest field for the Dante since 1984 reflected a Derby picture on which nothing had really stamped its supremacy and the events of the race resulted in more a shuffling of the pack than anything laying down a definitive marker, though in fairness it was a big effort from the winner under a month on from his debut, and with pattern-race winning juveniles in second and third and a gap back to the rest the form looks solid, up to scratch for a Dante if not at the level the likes of Golden Horn and Authorized have achieved in the race; the pace was sound even though a few failed to settle early and it was a pretty fair race tactically, though there were bits and pieces of trouble as the field stuck to the far rail in the straight.

WINGS OF DESIRE needs supplementing for the Derby, though all the indications are that he will be, and he'll head to Epsom with as much potential as anything in the field, having made giant strides in 3 starts within the space of a month, overcoming inexperience to take this just 19 days on from landing the odds in a Wolverhampton maiden, showing form that puts him at least level with and probably ahead of the other trial winners from recent weeks, entitled to be favourite on that basis, not least as he gives the firm impression he'll be even better back around 1½m; dropped out, he made relentless headway down the outside from 3f out and always looked likely to get past Deauville inside the final 1f, finding plenty to overhaul that rival late on.

DEAUVILLE (IRE) achieved plenty in 4 starts last year but has the make-up of a better 3-yo and proved the point fitted with a tongue strap back from 7 months off, well suited by the longer trip (will stay 1½m) and running to a level that makes him about the pick of his stable's obvious Derby contenders, on form in the book if not necessarily potential; chased leaders, led under 3f out, effort 2f out, kept on well, caught final 50 yds.

FOUNDATION (IRE) stayed the longer trip no problem and ran well, unlucky not to finish closer even, though probably still third best on the day, not an obvious one to reverse form with the first 2 should he turn up at Epsom though connections stated after the race that he will instead be aimed at the Prix du Jockey Club, a much more suitable target given that his stamina for 1½m is open to question; held up, headway when met some trouble 2f out, chased leaders final 1f, ran on; yet to improve upon the pick of his juvenile form, but he does remain with potential.

MUNTAZAH has the look of a better 3-y-o and ran well after 8 months off, seeing out the longer trip well considering he took a while to settle; mid-division, took strong hold, shuffled back 4f out, headway 2f out, ran on; he may do better still and is up to winning some good races with his sights lowered slightly.

MIDTERM all the rage in the betting and favourite for the Derby pre-race, is better than this but didn't show his form, about a stone below what he achieved at Sandown, faced with firmer conditions than previously but perhaps just having an off-day, and this underwhelming effort doesn't undo the impression created previously that he's a potential Group 1 horse, though it's obviously a knock on his Derby credentials, some doubt now as to whether he'll even take in the race; dropped out, took keen hold, pushed along over 3f out, headway 2f out, no extra final 1f.

VICTORY BOND under less testing conditions, still looked green and wasn't ready for this level of competition but shaped better than the distance beaten suggests and remains with potential assuming his sights are lowered next time; in touch, not settle fully, ridden 3f out, faded final 1f.

CHOREOGRAPHER (IRE) was asked a big question 17 days on from his maiden win and wasn't ready for it, though he'll benefit from the experience and has plenty of standing potential; held up, took keen hold, short of room over 2f out, kept on, never involved, not unduly punished once clearly not getting into it.

HARRISON had been going the right way but wasn't good enough up in grade, his potential at a lower level, for now at least; held up, headway 3f out, went prominent approaching final 1f.

BLACK SEA (IRE) ran below form up a a trip he should stay, not helped by some trouble, though he didn't pick up once in the clear; dropped out, not clear run over 2f out, made no impression.

KENTUCKYCONNECTION (USA) back up in trip, ran nothing like so well as in the Guineas, though that big effort was just 12 days previously, while this race didn't really go his way; raced wide, held up, went prominent after 3f, ridden 3f out, weakened.

SEA OF FLAMES back on turf, faced a stiff task, stamina maybe a factor too; led until under 3f out, went prominent.

TOP BEAK (IRE) in first-time tongue strap, again finished well held, needs sights lowering; chased leaders, dropped away 2f out.
