is a most consistent performer - his only poor effort in his last 7 starts coming in this race last year - and proved at least as good as ever back up at 1m, giving 3 lb to one who was given a very sound tactical ride no mean feat; never far away, switched outside leader after 2f, challenged over 1f out, quickened to lead inside final 1f, ridden out; it's a surprise he doesn't have a QEII entry given the lack of depth in the miling division this year - perhaps considered best on good or firmer ground - and it could be worth looking at some big international races instead.

well backed returning from 4 months off, produced a performance on a par with his Doncaster win at the start of the season despite the ground perhaps being quicker than ideal (trainer expressed reservations about running beforehand); soon led, switched onto far rail after 2f, quickened under 3f out, looked in control briefly under 2f out, tackled over 1f out, headed inside final 1f, ran on, pulled clear of remainder; still only 8 runs into his career, he has the potential to go higher still back on easier ground, a QEII entry by no means fanciful given the lack of depth in the division at present.

back on much firmer ground, never really threatened the first pair and his progress has stalled for now, though he's in the right hands to fulfil his potential in due course, remaining the type to do better at 4 yrs (perhaps over slightly further); in touch, effort under 3f out, not quicken under 2f out, no match for principals but not unduly punished to secure third.

had returned to form on his last couple of starts but this was a bit of a backward step, highlighting his limitations at this level nowadays; mid-division, not quicken 2f out, edged left inside final 1f, one paced.

easy to back after 6 weeks off, had a Group 1 penalty to carry but just wasn't on a going day, highlighted by an even worse start than usual; very slowly away, in rear, shaken up over 3f out, made no impression; his Queen Anne win, while very much a standout this year, is clearly the pertinent bit of form when it comes to assessing his chance in the QEII.

Only 2 of the 5 were on their game but the pair of them fought out a good contest in a fast time - despite the early gallop being on the steady side - and both have the potential to go higher still in the right circumstances.
