was on much better terms with Salute The Soldier compared to his last 2 efforts in handicaps and didn't need to be at his best to win this race for the second time; in touch, travelled well, headway to lead over 1f out, driven clear; may well be back at Ascot for another crack at a big 7f handicap next time, though his new BHA mark of 112 will obviously be very tough to defy.

fitter for recent run, ran up to best behind a superior rival, proving himself over this longer trip; mid-field, shaken up 2f out, headway over 1f out, not quicken final 1f.

wasn't disgraced, not getting any weight from the winner in this company; prominent, led briefly 2f out, faded entering final 1f; he's had a really productive campaign and could be the type to raise his game again as a 5-y-o.

was suited - as expected - by the step back up in trip and ran his best race in a first-time hood; raced off the pace, ridden over 2f out, stayed on, nearest at the finish; 1m should be well within range now he's calmed down a bit, and he may do better.

proved at least as good as ever on first outing since leaving Richard Hannon after 7 weeks off, though this isn't a solid bit of form; mid-field, pushed along over 2f out, plugged on.

A second rematch between Salute The Soldier and Tabarrak, who'd finished first and second in a couple of recent top-end handicaps, the latter on much better terms in this company and reversing form in straightforward fashion; the gallop was ordinary and 1 or 2 of the also-rans could be a bit flattered by their proximity to the principals.

TABARRAK (IRE) was on much better terms with Salute The Soldier compared to his last 2 efforts in handicaps and didn't need to be at his best to win this race for the second time; in touch, travelled well, headway to lead over 1f out, driven clear; may well be back at Ascot for another crack at a big 7f handicap next time, though his new BHA mark of 112 will obviously be very tough to defy.
