after 13 weeks off, turned in best effort of the season to register a fourth course win, seen to advantage under the sort of fine front-running ride his jockey (who was replacing a claimer) has made a habit of producing in staying chases in the North in recent seasons; made all, jumped well, pushed along before 3 out, tackled next, typically carried head bit awkwardly but stayed on well; he isn't sure to be in the same form next time, especially if he's unable to dominate.

who won this race last year, was well backed to repeat the feat and ran creditably, but couldn't get past a strong-staying rival who'd had the run of things; held up, travelled well, took closer order sixth, mistake tenth, second when ridden 2 out, every chance last, held flat.
