improved a little further to land the odds and notch a handicap 4-timer (Newton Abbot form strong), a soft lead meaning his stamina for the longer trip didn't get a stern examination, though the well-treated runner-up did keep him honest late on; dictated, jumped fluently, travelled smoothly, quickened end of back straight, threatened run-in, held second final 50 yds; it's to be hoped the handicapper takes more notice of the margin between the front pair rather than the much larger gap back to the third.

showed plenty of ability remains back over hurdles, suggesting he could prove money well spent at £7,500 from Charlie Mann, notwithstanding his quirks; chased leader, ridden briefly 4 out, rallied next, pressed leader soon after, driven entering straight, threatened leader run-in, stayed on.

failed to repeat his Warwick effort, both in terms of form and style, underlining he's still a tricky customer; tracked pace, went in snatches, outpaced briefly 3 out, ridden from next, left behind before straight.

What seemed set to prove a routine fourth successive win for the favourite - after he'd set a steady pace and travelled far better than the other 2 - ended up as a bit of a scrap, though the runner-up had a good bit going for him as well, perhaps not the flimsy piece of form it might seem for a handicap at this level.
