When a horse that had the lowest pre-race rating makes every yard to cause an upset it's tempting to think that there's an element of flattery at play but in this instance it's hard to argue with Teodoro's performance against the clock as he maintained a strong gallop and recorded a very fast time, breaking the course record.

TEODORO (IRE) reverted to the front-running tactics that served him so well when progressing quickly last summer, a strong galloper who's at his best ridden in this way, and under optimum conditions (goes well on fast ground and boasts a fine course record) he showed much improved form to cause a surprise jumped up to Group company; made all, went clear over 4f out, driven 2f out, stayed on strongly; he's still in the Ebor, for which he'd pick up just a 4-lb penalty and would be well-in in theory, but there'd have to be doubts as to whether he'd be quite so effective in a maximum-field scenario at York over almost 4f further.

BROROCCO followed up his career-best effort in the York Stakes with another cracking run in defeat, confirming his sudden graduation into pattern races, no doubting his ability, but his quirks and late-closing style do mean that he's not the easiest to win with; dwelt, in rear, travelled well, headway out wide 2f out, took second last ½f, ran on, no impression on winner.

ZAAKI put up a big performance when conceding 12 lb to and almost beating Communique at Newmarket last month but, whilst not disgraced, he failed repeat that back in a pattern race and didn't convince that he was knuckling down fully at the business end; held up, travelled better than most, headway out wide over 3f out, chased leader over 1f out, hung left, carried head awkwardly, one paced; he's a smart colt but has still only won once, that when odds on for a novice event.

COMMUNIQUE (IRE) has progressed really well through some competiive handicaps but was found out in even better company; chased leaders, ridden 4f out, outpaced over 2f out, plugged on, no match for principals.

ELWAZIR still looked rather green when winning at Ascot for all that it was a smart performance and perhaps wasn't quite ready for this significant step up in class; chased leader, ridden over 2f out, weakened approaching final 1f, not persevered with once held; he remains unexposed and could prove himself up to this level another day.

GABRIAL (IRE) wasn't on a going day; mid-division, struggling 2f out, made little impression.

FAJJAJ (IRE) clearly wasn't 100% on the day; chased leaders, off the bridle before most, lost place over 2f out, heavily eased off.
