Traditionally the first clash at 1m of the best of the 3-yos against the pick of their elders, this year the respective rankings not conclusively proved, the older milers certainly all much of a muchness, the pecking order in the younger ranks leaning towards Too Darn Hot, though this was another closely fought Sussex, only Kingman and Lightning Spear having won by further since Frankel was in his pomp, the pace seeming to favour those ridden handily, the form hard to rate that highly - the winner assessed as performing below the level he reached last time.

TOO DARN HOT has got his season back on track with a vengeance on his last 2 starts, not needing to match his Chantilly form to follow up, winning only narrowly but the signs there that he can emerge at the head of this division as the summer progresses; tracked pace, travelled well, shaken up over 1f out, led soon after, kept on, won readily; he's currently entered in the Sprint Cup at Haydock and the Irish Champion, butt a campaign around 1m is surely the best option, with the Jacques Le Marois or the Moulin plausible options, likely to take the beating in either, the Breeders' Cup Mile apparently the end-of-season aim.

CIRCUS MAXIMUS (IRE) proved at least as good as ever, even though unable to confirm Ascot placings with the resurgent winner, another race at this level entirely possible as the season progresses; close up, travelled well, led 2f out, ridden soon after, headed 1f out, kept on.

I CAN FLY ran well, emerging best of the older milers, coming from further back than the front pair too; held up, headway 2f out, not quicken inside final 1f, never landed a blow; she has an obvious target in the Matron Stakes.

HAPPY POWER (IRE) seemed to excel himself up in grade, the move away from firmish ground perhaps explaining that, worth giving full credit for the improvement for now; waited with, shaken up over 2f out, not quicken, kept on inside final 1f.

LORD GLITTERS (FR) had finished a creditable third in last year's running, but ran just respectably this time, though best excused the run, the run of the race not playing to his strengths at all; in rear, still plenty to do over 2f out, not quicken, kept on final 1f, finished with running left; he'll presumably have the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes his end-of-season aim, though entries in the International and the Irish Champion suggest a try over further is on the cards, an option well worth taking up.

PHOENIX OF SPAIN (IRE) disappointed, able to dictate this time but not really at home on the track and soon done with once headed; led, hung left, shaken up over 2f out, headed soon after, weakened over 1f out; his standout run came on firmer ground than he's encountered since, which gives a straw at which to clutch.

ZABEEL PRINCE (IRE) back down in trip, was below form, checking out rather tamely, given his position and how he travelled, his season rather falling away after such a good start; tracked pace, travelled well, shaken up over 2f out, weakened final 1f.

ACCIDENTAL AGENT ran respectably in first-time cheekpieces, setting off fine this time, though never really looking likely to finish better than where he did; held up, shaken up over 2f out, not quicken.
