An up-to-scratch Goodwood Cup as opposed to an exceptional one, lacking in up-and-comers and notable for below-par efforts from the pair that hit the frame in the Gold Cup the previous month, no improvement required from the Godolphin duo that fought out the finish, though both value for efforts bordering on very smart; the gallop was essentially steady despite a brief injection of pace halfway, though they were well strung out by the finish and it's hard to find compelling tactical excuses for any of the beaten horses.

CAVALRYMAN only managed sixth in this in 2013 but arrived at the top of his game this time around and made it 3 wins from 4 starts for the season without needing to step up on recent form that already set the standard; held up, headway under pressure from 3f out, led 2f out, kept on well, closed down near finish, pushed out; he'll remain a force at this level.

AHZEEMAH (IRE) bounced back to form, at least as good as ever in repeating his placing from this race last year; in touch, headway when not clear run 3f out, progress 2f out, chased leader final 1f, stayed on/closed to line as winner idled; he held his form well upon finding it last season, winning the Lonsdale at York after his good run here.

BROWN PANTHER only briefly threatened to follow up his win in this race year and has seemingly lost his edge since the Gold Cup, this no more than a respectable run; close up, not settle fully, ridden 3f out, every chance 2f out, no extra entering final 1f; he might be best freshened up for the autumn now.

BRASS RING back down in trip, ran about as well as could have been expected back up in grade, unable to cope when the pace lifted and never a threat; held up, outpaced over 4f out, plodded on.

ANGEL GABRIAL (IRE) arrived on a sharp upward curve but was below form up in grade, rather caught out reverting to a small-field conditions race from the big-field handicaps in which he's been thriving, plus caught wide throughout under a rider unable to claim; raced wide, mid-division, raced freely, ridden 3f out, weakened approaching final 1f; he's probably worth another chance, as Newcastle suggested he's at least a listed-class stayer.

EXCELLENT RESULT (IRE) again ran well below his best, maybe just not in much form for all he may not have stayed the longer trip; dictated, pushed along 3f out, headed 2f out, weakened over 1f out.

FORGOTTEN VOICE (IRE) was well held up in trip, probably found wanting for stamina, though a quick mid-race move probably didn't help in the end; steadied at the start, in rear, rapid headway to track leaders halfway, ridden 3f out, weakened 2f out, not persevered with once held.

ESTIMATE (IRE) was sent off favourite but ran poorly, most likely recoiling from her big reappearance at Royal Ascot 6 weeks earlier, a more likely explanation than the track not suiting (ran well here in 2012); close up, ridden over 3f out, weakened 2f out, not persevered with once held; she's not the sort to stand much racing.
