It's often the case that this doesn't take so much winning as most valuable handicaps at big festivals and that's probably the case again, with the 2 that fought out a narrow finish both fully exposed, the winner having his twelfth go in a handicap chase having failed to win one previously; Our Mick ensured a sound pace from early on the final circuit, though nothing laid down a serious challenge from the rear half of the field.

DUKE OF LUCCA (IRE) ran right up to best to make his breakthrough in handicap company over fences at the twelfth attempt; mid-division, in touch when not fluent fourteenth, effort 3 out, stayed on to lead last, closed down close home, driven out; consistent in the main but fully exposed, so not much to think this rare win will suddenly open the floodgates.

VINO GRIEGO (FR) bounced back to form with easily his most worthwhile effort of the season, proving at least as good as ever; prominent, not fluent ninth, ridden when challenged 3 out, led next, headed last, rallied well flat, just failed; it's anyone's guess whether he'll be in the same mood next time.

GULLINBURSTI (IRE) ran well with visor on back under these less testing conditions without having any clear excuses; handy, travelled well, not quicken 3 out, rallied last, kept on.

KIAN'S DELIGHT gave a good account pitched into a competitive race back from 6 months off, seeing out the longer trip thoroughly for all he never looked like winning; handy, blundered sixth, outpaced 5 out, ran on late; he'll presumably be on the go through the summer, when his stable tradtitionally does very well.

GOLDEN CHIEFTAIN (IRE) turned in easily best effort of season with tongue strap left off, seemingly coming to the boil now, not that he's got much in hand from this mark; mid-division, in touch 5 out, pushed along next, not quicken.

OUR MICK without the headgear this time, seemed in a much better mood back from 10 weeks off and duly ran best race of the season under a forceful ride; soon led, not fluent first, reminders circuit out, pressed on soon after, clouted fourteenth, headed 2 out, faded flat; not guaranteed to build on this, but has been given a big chance by the handicapper.

MINELLA FOR VALUE (IRE) might have needed run after 6 months off and wasn't disgraced without threatening to play a major role; handy, pushed along 5 out, not quicken, weakened 2 out.

UNIONISTE (FR) produced a laboured effort after 10 weeks off, maybe developing a lazy streak even if he might have found things happening a bit quickly under less testing conditions in this big field; mid-field, mistake tenth, lost place next, labouring badly 5 out, plodded on; he's worth a try in headgear.

SIR DU BEARN (FR) is potentially well handicapped but will probably need a lesser race to prove the point, no threat here back from 9 weeks off; held up, mistakes third, eleventh, never involved.

JOHNS SPIRIT (IRE) wasn't seen to best effect back up at a trip he seems not to relish, shaping better than plenty that beat him; dropped out, behind when clouted 5 out, headway next, weakened 2 out; type to bounce back quickly.

RENARD (FR) was below form; handy, slow twelfth, pushed along fourteenth, well beaten 4 out.

TRANQUIL SEA (IRE) was well held; soon detached, went with little fluency, merely passed beaten horses.

SAINT ARE (FR) goes well here (won this race off 8 lb higher in 2012) but ran poorly, let down by jumping and attitude with visor back on; mid-field, never travelling well, lost place sixth, beaten when fell twelfth.

CARRUTHERS unseated rider start.

WIESENTRAUM (GER) in first-time blinkers, found this too competitive; mid-division, well beaten 5 out.

WETAK (FR) ran poorly back up in trip, about the only thing positive being that he didn't seem to have a hard race; mid-division, behind when slow fourth, never involved.

VICTOR HEWGO made plenty of appeal on handicap debut judged on solid novice form (backed accordingly) but seemed to go amiss after a bad mistake at the eighth, having already found himself in a poor position.
