Hot To Trot: Expect more Magique from Gosden

ArticleImage

Adam Houghton flags up three trainers who are in good form at present and picks out some interesting horses that may run for them in the coming days.

Flat trainer: John Gosden

Enable was a dominant winner of the Irish Oaks at the Curragh on Saturday and capped what has been a terrific spell for trainer John Gosden. Indeed, Gosden has saddled eight winners from his last 36 runners and he will be hoping to continue his fine form in the coming days, with Pouvoir Magique a particularly interesting runner in the listed Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton on Friday evening. The three-year-old opened his account in ready fashion at Ayr earlier this month and should have more to offer after just two starts, while an entry in the Great Voltigeur suggests he is held in high regard by connections. Great Sound also looked a good prospect when making a winning debut at Chepstow in June, and should be suited by the stiffer test than last time if taking his chance at Haydock on Friday - Gosden also has the improving Joshua Reynolds entered in the same race - while the market will guide should the well bred Timpani (half-sister to several winners, including the smart Poseidon Adventure) make her debut at Newmarket on the same day.

Jumps trainer: Dr Richard Newland

Dr Richard Newland has made a great start to the 2017/18 jumps season, with nine winners already on the board at this relatively early stage of proceedings. The trainer of 2014 Grand National winner Pineau de Re, Newland does particularly well with his recruits from other yards and can be expected to get the best out of Gettysburg Address before too long. The six-year-old failed to win any of his seven starts over obstacles for Noel Meade in Ireland, but he does at least have some fair form to his name, and wasn't disgraced when third on his debut for Newland at Ffos Las last month. He holds entries at both Worcester (Tuesday) and Uttoxeter (Wednesday) next week and should be competitive in either if bouncing back to his best. Slim Pickens, on the other hand, is nothing if not consistent, having finished second in each of his three starts since winning at Hexham in May. He has a 3 lb hike in the weights to contend with if lining up at Worcester on Tuesday, but remains one to keep onside in his current mood.

Under the radar: Ed Walker

Ed Walker has been hitting the crossbar a bit of late with eight placed from his last 20 runners, but the horses are in good form at least and Walker will have been particularly encouraged by Stormy Antarctic's performance in the Minstrel Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday. The four-year-old ran on well to be beaten just one and three quarter lengths and will be suited by steppping back up in trip next time. Walker has plenty to keep him occupied in the meantime, however, and will be hoping for another good effort from Captain Courageous at Sandown on Wednesday. He has won two of his last three starts, including when producing a career best at Haydock last time, and may do better still now that everything has clicked. Meanwhile, Trilliant showed much improved form to make a winning handicap bow on her most recent outing at Haydock and remains potentially well treated if attempting to follow up from 8 lb higher in the weights at Leicester on Thursday. Indeed, she is a big filly, who is only just coming to herself, and remains open to more improvement.
