Rule the World broke his maiden over fences in the race widely regarded as the world's greatest, as he surged past The Last Samuri in the closing stages to give jockey David Mullins and trainer Mouse Morris a first win in the Crabbie's Grand National.
1. Rule the World (David Mullins) 33/1
2. The Last Samuri 8/1 JF
3. Vics Canvas 100/1
4. Gilgamboa 28/1
5. Goonyella 12/1
It was a hugely emotional victory for Morris, who lost his son tragically to carbon monoxide poisoning last year, and provided the trainer with a second National winner in the space of two weeks, following Rogue Angel's win in the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse.
Rule the World finished second in that race himself last year and a place looked like the best he could hope for once again jumping the last, but he rallied bravely as the leaders approached the elbow and was ultimately six lengths clear of The Last Samuri at the line, with 100/1 shot Vics Canvas a further eight lengths back in third.
It was also a remarkable first ride in the race for 19-year-old jockey David Mullins, who was unable to use his 3 lb claim in this race, but belied his inexperience to give his mount the perfect ride and provide owner Gigginstown House Stud with another landmark victory after Don Cossack's win in last month's Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Mullins exclaimed: "It's unbelievable. I just couldn't expect things to have gone better. There was one little mishap at the fourth-last, but everything went to plan really.
"Mouse is a genius and he's the best man in the world for preparing a horse for one day. I'm very thankful to Michael and Eddie O'Leary for giving me the chance.
"That's the best ride I've ever got off a horse and it's the best feeling to come back into a place like this. It was just brilliant."
Trainer Mouse Morris was equally delighted and admitted: "I don't know what to say. To have the two in a couple of weeks is unbelievable. I've a lad who's doing overtime for me up above.
"He (Rule The World) wasn't badly named, was he?"
There were 16 finishers in total and all horses and jockeys were reported to have returned safely.
